CAP’NS LOG 27 MAY 2018

Alkimos 3 v East Fremantle 12

The Pirates travelled to the windswept shores of East Fremantle to battle the home team, hoping to avenge the loss suffered by the Pirates men’s team just 24 hours earlier. The game got off to the best possible start, with Aaliyah Bond-Swadling scoring the games first goal with what is already a trademark- a full field sprint leaving the East defenders in her jet stream, and skipping the ball low past the keeper. From that point East Freo took control, with a flurry of drives from behind the cage ending with a 6-1 scoreline at quarter time.

As has been the case in the Pirates first few games, the battle ahead seemed to strengthen their resolve, and some much tighter guarding and more organized defense started to slow the flow of East goals, with the half ending 10-1.

The second half showed what this team is truly capable of. Kirrily Thomas was an absolute brick wall in goals, making double digit point blank saves, whilst the defense of Nya, Tayla, Nikita and Shayella were playing fantastic team d, repelling the Blues forays into attack countless times. It was a sneaky Tayla Danby feed from x that found Jordy Ballarine cutting through to score a beautiful goal….worthy of the highlight reel! Great scoring opportunities by Amy Stewart, Shayella Tilbrook, Shanae Gillespie and Rachel Raward were unlucky not to see the margin tighten further. Aaliyah and Tammy Sanders ran hard all game in transition and were ground ball machines, giving the Pirates much needed offensive possession. The extremely even second half ended tied 2-2 after a second Ballarine goal, and the final score of 12-3 again didn’t paint the whole picture of a very competitive match.
